Cowe thrives in Raiders win

On Saturday the Rattle'n'Hum Reef Raiders took on cellar dwellers Wanderers and with a view of gaining back to back wins.

With confidence riding high in the club the boys took to the field, but it was Wanderers who come out with the fire in their belly and it took some great defence to stop the visitors getting over the line.

After 10 minutes the Raiders settled down and started to wear the Wanderers' defence down making inroads all over the park.

Josh Mezger was the first to cross the line after 20 minutes and that opened the flood gates for Grae Gilbert and Jackson Demler to post tries from the back of some great support play and field position.

So at the half the raiders headed in 17- 0 which was pleasing that another half where no points were conceded.

The second half was a special one as Liam Cowe, the first junior Raiders player to come through and make his senior debut, did not disappoint. His first two touches created a try scoring chance only for the support to get bundled out one metre before the line.

Then he made a 50 metre run to give the Raiders great field position, eventually seeing Simon Chick score 10 phases later.

But to Wanderers' credit they didn't give up and scored two tries themselves - one which was a really soft try. But not to be outdone Liam decided they were not to be the last points of the game, scoring a try on debut much to his delight and to his mum on the hill and dad playing.

The final score was a bonus point win to the Raiders 29 -14. The players of the day went to Paul Ferrero, Liam Cowe and Paddys Man of the Match went to Dad "Disco Stew".

Next week sees the Raiders head to West Barlow to take on ladder leaders Barron Trinity who will be fired up after their first lost last week.

A much improved effort will be needed if the Raiders are to keep winning and hand Barron their second loss of the year.
