Community spirit shines in parade

An enthusiastic crowd gathered to cheer on entrants into the Macrossan Street Parade on Friday night, with organisers hailing the event a great success.

Inclement weather delayed the event by a week, and even threatened Friday night's running with rain hampering efforts to assemble a large enough field of floats.

But with just minutes to spare before the scheduled start of the event, around 30 floats were unveiled.

Carnivale general manager Ken Dobbs estimated around four thousand people lined the streets, half the usual number seen during Carnivale, but was proud of the efforts of all involved.

"We're elated by the spirit of the participants," Mr Dobbs said.

"The spirit of this community to come out and do it is remarkable. It is a credit to the community to support it."

He added that he was equally as proud of Friday night's parade as any in the event's history due to the obstacles it overcame to take to the streets.

Quicksilver was awarded the Best Overall Float taking the $1000 prize, while Lou's Fitness won Best Themed Float. Best Commercial Float went to On The Spot Signs, while Mossman Primary School won the Best Community Float.
