Champagne soccer earns Dragons win

The Douglas United Dragons Second Division side finally got a result to go with a very good performance in their Far North Football clash with JCU last Friday night at Cassowary Park, Mossman.

The Douglas boys arrived at the game in seemingly high spirits after a two-week break from playing, due to a wash-out the previous weekend, seemingly getting right back to business.

Early on it was all Douglas pressure and possession and within the first minutes Daniel Houghton was put through one-on-one with the keeper. Unfortunately he was unable to finish.

Moments later Adam Wright, getting a start as forward, was put through but after battling through some shirt pulling was also unable to find the back of the net with his effort just rolling wide.

Douglas would let the tempo drop a little as the first half drifted on due to some fatigue, but also the lack of reward was frustrating them. Douglas began to wonder if this would be another game they would play well but struggle to score.

The first half would come to a close at 0-0. Douglas knew if they could bring the high tempo which they started with and take a few more chances in the second half, the game was there to be won.

Douglas came out for the second half once again with a high tempo, it looked like a matter of time before they found the breakthrough, and they did. With some rather suspect goalkeeping, the ball was seemingly punched into Nicholas Despres’ back, which rolled into the net for 1-0 Douglas.

JCU had their best chance of the game when they unleashed a long range shot saved well by Heath Melton, who had to react well to get up and also save the rebound.

It was one of the few opportunities for JCU on the night who were marked out of the game by a very strong Douglas defence. Mark Lee was a commanding presence and great leader on the night for his Douglas teammates.

With 10 minutes left, the Dragons were hoping they would find that second goal which would finish the game for them. Adam Wright found a bit of space in the box, got the ball to feet and was able to turn and let a shot go. Taking a slight deflection on the way through, the ball would go past the keeper for 2-0 Douglas.

JCU, desperate to get something now pushed very high, leaving themselves open at the back. It was just before the final whistle when Adam Wright was given a through ball on the counter attack, leaving the defender and held his nerve with a top class finish for 3-0 Douglas.

Adam, getting a brace on his second start for the club and first game up front, was clearly happy, judging by his dance move celebration.

The game finished 3-0 and Douglas finally got the result to match the performance they had been after.

The "Paddy's Irish Bar" Man of the Match award could have been awarded to a number of players on the night. But a player who is becoming an unsung hero at the back is Ben Syrett who can add another solid performance to his season along with another man of the match award.

Douglas will make up the game which was rained out at home to Marlin Coast at Cassowary Park, Mossman, tonight. 8pm kick-off.
