CEO Lyn Russell to leave Council

Mayor Bob Manning yesterday announced that Chief Executive Officer Lyn Russell will vacate her position at the end of this week.

Council and Ms Russell have agreed on arrangements to end Ms Russell’s contract effective close of business Friday, June 29, and it is believed councillors yesterday voted unanimously on the move.

Cr Manning said the termination of the CEO’s contract was amicable and that Council wished Ms Russell the best in her future endeavours, although he said reasons for the termination were not to be made public as Council were bound by a confidentiality agreement.

Ms Russell joined Cairns Regional Council as CEO in November 2009, with some seeing her as an uncompromising figurehead.

Ms Russell said one of her greatest achievements was ensuring Council remained an employer of choice during a tough economic climate.

“I am proud of our staff, who continually meet the significant challenges we face every day in local government,” Ms Russell said.

“Cairns Regional Council is a key driver in the economic recovery for the region, and I congratulate all staff for their teamwork and professionalism.”

When asked if the CEO's departure was part of a broader review of Council's senior management structure, Cr Manning told The Newsport "nothing should be read into this."

General Manager of Planning and Environment Peter Tabulo will be acting CEO while Council embarks on a recruitment program to attract a replacement for Ms Russell.
