Cairns' lagoon reopens

Maintenance work on the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon will be completed ahead of schedule, with the waterfront pool set to reopen this Saturday morning.

Mayor Bob Manning said Council staff had been working around the clock to ensure work was completed in a timely manner.

“We are pleased this work has finished ahead of schedule and the lagoon will be open for the enjoyment of residents and visitors during the second week of the Queensland school holidays and in time for the start of the southern states’ holidays,” Cr Manning said.

Work undertaken includes replacement of timber decks, refurbishment of underwater lights, circulation pumps, pipes and filters, sand renewal and general cleaning.

Community Services, Sport and Cultural Services General Manager Ian Lowth said the lagoon was refilled with water from Trinity Inlet on Sunday.

“However, chemical treatment of the water takes several days to settle, which is why we are unable to open the lagoon to swimmers until Saturday,” Mr Lowth said.

“We appreciate the patience and cooperation shown during the past few weeks and, in the interest of safety, we ask that this continues as we finish off the final touches on this refurbishment.”
