Back to back for Dragons

Tuesday night saw a catch up game between Douglas United and Marlin Coast in the FNQ Football Second Division at Cassowary Park, Mossman.

The game would be a very close affair but would end with Douglas feeling a real momentum after racking up two wins and two clean sheets back to back.

From the start it was clear this would be a very close game with both teams trying to stamp some authority on the game, but none being really able to take clear control.

Both teams were enjoying good build up plays but no clear cut chances had been presented to either team.

Around the half hour mark Adam Wright picked up the ball for Douglas around 30 yards out. Feeling in a confident mood after a great performance in his last outing for Douglas, he travelled a few yards and let fly.

Although not the greatest of strikes it somehow trickled under the goalkeeper giving Douglas a 1-0 lead.

At the half Douglas were clearly feeling a bit of fatigue after playing on the Friday and then the Tuesday night and working very hard in both games. To make sure they left here with the win they would have to give it all they had mentally and physically.

The second half passed by with seemingly few incidents apart from Jason Fox being put through for Douglas one on one with the keeper, but a Marlin defender was able to recover very well to stop Jason from getting a good shot off.

In the last fifteen minutes Marlin Coast really started to pressure the Douglas backline and test their resolve. With under ten minutes left a Marlin coast winger was able to drift past a few Douglas players and let a decent shot fly. Unfortunately for him but luckily for Douglas it found the post and not the back of the net.

This was a huge wake up call for Douglas who knew they had just seen a moment which could have completely turned the game around.

Shortly after, with only seconds left, Adam Wright got into the box cut the ball back for a Douglas team mate but it deflected off a Marlin Coast defender and found the back of the net for 2-0 Douglas.

The 'Paddy's Irish Bar' Man of the match award went to Mathew 'Macca' McMaster who gave a great energetic performance on the night.

With Douglas not having a league game last Friday night they played a friendly in preparation for next week's league game against JCU.

Douglas won the game 4-1 with goals coming from Adam Wright, Mathew McMaster, Nick Despres and Nick Houghton.

Douglas will now play Stratford away on Friday night.
