Wearne a winner on the range

by Steve Cruickshank

Saturday saw a couple of faithful shooters turn up for a 400 metre double range shoot and also three visitors turned up to try their hand at this very precise sport.

Neil Attwood was first on the mound shooting in the Full Bore 10 shot match. Neil opened with a wayward 2 and then a 5, he chose to cut the 2 and keep the 5 and went on to shoot a mixed bag of 3’s, 4’s and 5’s to shoot a first round score of 39/0 out of a possible 50.

Rob Wearne was on the mound next in the Full Bore match. Rob opened with a bird (outside the main target area) for his first sighter and then a 4 which he gave orders to cut them both, then Rob went on to shoot fairly consistently with 4’s and 5’s and one V Bull to give him a first round score of 44/1 out of a possible 50.

Kevin Mathers from Adelaide was down on the mound next trying his skill behind a scoped mauser action 308 in the F Class category. Kevin opened with a bird (2) and then shot a bulls eye and a string of 4’s and a 3 to finish his short round as he was only giving it a try. He shot well.

Neil Attwood was back on the range for his second 400 metre match shooting in the Full Bore (manually supported with peep sights) comp. Neil opened with a pair of 4’s which he cut and then went on to squeeze off a mixed bag to give him a score of 43/0 out of 55.

Rob Wearne was back for his second range, and opened with a V Bull and a 4 which he gave orders to cut both. Rob was having trouble with his sights and suffered considerably in his 11 shot match giving him a second range score of 48/1, dropping 7 points from 55.

Our next visitors were from Geelong and decided they would like to try their hand at target shooting. First to shoulder the Ruger M77 308 scoped rifle was Rick Tukavkin.

Rick was happy to have only two shots which he place well on the target with a 3 and a 4. Next was Sue Tukavkin to shoulder the mild kicking 308 Ruger. Sue, being left handed found it a bit awkward to handle a right handed rifle, nevertheless Sue squeezed off a fine shot to hit the target scoring a 3.

Rob Wearne took the honours with a final score of 92/2 out of a possible 105 and then Neil Attwood following close behind with a final tally of 82/0.

In summary, a good day was had by all and a big thank you to our marker and scorer. We would like to invite anyone who would like to try their skills at this very relaxed sport to come along and give it a go.

We shoot every Saturday at 1pm at the club half way between Port Douglas and Mossman on the Captain Cook Highway.
