Strange times for Douglas thirds
Friday night saw a game between Douglas united and Dimbulah in the FNQ Football Third Division at Dimbulah. The game would be dominated mostly by Dimbulah who would leave with the win which would end the Douglas winning streak. The game would also be remembered for some bizarre decisions that affected both teams.
The first half was heavily dominated by Dimbulah who showed their strength on and off the ball by retaining possession extremely well and pressuring all over the field when they didn't have the ball.
The first chance of the game however would not fall to Dimbulah but Douglas when Adam Wright let a half volley fly from around 25 yards to see it superbly saved and pushed over the crossbar for a corner kick. That would be the only real chance Douglas would create in the first half as they struggled to hold on to the ball for any real length of time.
The first bit of controversy in the game happened as the first half was coming to a close when a Dimbulah forward was bundled over in the box by Ashley Woods. The referee was unclear in his decision so left it to the referee’s assistant to dictate the call and he awarded a penalty for Dimbulah.
After some protesting by Douglas players the striker stepped up and dragged his penalty wide of the goal to keep the game at 0-0 as they went in for the half.
The second half would have to see a massive turn around in pressure and possession if Douglas hoped to get anything out of this game.
Under one minute into the second half a glorious chance presented itself to Adam Wright for Douglas. Matty Wray played a first time ball through for Adam who found himself one on one with the keeper and what seemed like all the time in the world to pick his place.
Unfortunately for Adam and his Douglas team mates he picked the outside of the post and the game remained 0-0.
Shortly after this chance Douglas found themselves with another one on one opportunity as Joe Fox was put through against the keeper. Joe managed to get the ball on target but his shot would find some of the keeper which would do just enough to deflect the ball wide and out of play.
In recent weeks that little bit of luck you need for the ball to go in had been there for Douglas but when two chances like this in the space of minutes do not go in you have to wonder if it is going to be your day.

Then the moment that Douglas had feared, a slight lack of concentration at the back would lead to a Dimbulah striker having a clear sight at goal and he would apply a nice touch to make it 1-0 Dimbulah around the hour mark.
Then another odd decision by the referee, Dimbulah playing a long ball into the box saw it claimed by Douglas keeper Heath Melton, only for him to be charged at which lead to the ball being dropped and Dimbulah tapping it in for 2-0.
The referee's assistant spotting the incident tried to inform the referee however on this occasion the ref was not interested in what his assistant had to say so the score was now 2-0 in Dimbulah's favour.
Shortly after Douglas moved the ball around well and tried to play a ball in behind the Dimbulah defence for Adam Wright to run on to. However Adam slightly miss timed his run and was in an offside position, clear for all to see, apart from one man, the referee.
Adam ran clean through and added some extra power to a well-placed finish for 2-1 with around 10 minutes left.
In the final minutes Douglas had a couple of half chances and a strong appeal for a penalty turned down and Dimbulah would get a deserved victory with a score line of 2-1.
The "Paddy’s Irish bar" Man of the Match award would go to Adam Wright who not only provided another goal for the Dragons but worked tirelessly up front pressuring the ball.
This Friday Douglas travel to Leichhardt.
