Raiders leave Cairns empty handed

The Rattle 'n' Hum Reef Raiders travelled to Cairns on the weekend and took on the ladder leaders Barron Trinity.

The raiders went into the match quietly confident of handing Barron their second loss of the year, but someone forgot to pass the message on to Barron. After 25 minutes the Bulls were ahead 20 nil.

This was due to some poor defence and penalties from the Raiders, and the lack of ball control and poor options in attack. In the final 15 minutes of the half the Raiders had better ball control and found themselves in better field position to see Todd Funch score before the half.

The Raiders also had a final chance with one minute to go only to see the ball hit the deck.

The break saw the Raiders get their breath back and talk about what was happening and it made a huge difference to their attitude as they camped on the Bulls' line for 15 minutes.

With a huge amount of ball, the Raiders took Funch cross for his second try out wide and the Raiders were back in the game. But that would be the Raiders' last points for the match, but not for lack of trying.

Barron crossed the line due to some poor tackling right on their try line by the Raiders finishing with a 27 to 10 win.

"The mood in the camp was still high, but at least we know where we stand and what we need to work on at training if we are to get to the final," the Raiders coach said.

The players that stood out for the day were Clint Kachel, Disco Stew and the Paddys Man of the Match went to Paul Ferrero.

The raiders will be looking for much improved effort next week as they take on Southside at home at 4pm with Reserve Grade starting at 2pm.
