Many businesses are recording record sales figures as Port Douglas becomes flavour of the month with visitors from all over the world.

Crowded footpaths are a welcome sight for retailers and eateries, while bookings in accommodation are returning to near capacity.

"We've broken all occupancy records since March," said Macrossan House's Trevor Hurst. "It's so busy (in town) I've give up walking on the footpath, I was on the road now," he said.

Jo Wagner from Port Douglas Cookies said this year's influx of visitors is reminiscent of Port's boom period a decade ago.

"It feels like Port Douglas has come alive again. It's like the high seasons we used to experience years ago," she said.

The Ironbar is also being run off its feet. Owner Steve Hull said Tuesday night trade resulted in more meals being served than any time in the venue's 18 year history.

"Everyone wants to come to Port. We've had that many inquiries for corporate functions it's almost a full time job in itself.

"It's not a hard sell, it's a beautiful destination," he said.

Kelly and John Buckell agree. The pair have travelled to Port Douglas from Bendigo, Victoria, with their four boys and their friends, and are repeat visitors having spent their holidays here for the past 12 years.

"We came up to do the Gold Coast Marathon and extended our holiday a week to come up here," Kelly said.

"We love the beach, the shops, the food (and the ice-cream according to the kids), it's a really relaxed atmosphere."

In The Newsport article 'Port rebounds in popularity' (Wednesday 27 June, 2012), Port Douglas was named the third most popular holiday spot for the July school holidays according to booking agent Wotif.com.
