MBS milestone today

Last Wednesday saw the 100 day milestone reached by the LNP State Government. Today marks 100 days since an event which could be even more significant for the future of Port Douglas - the public presentation of the Melbourne Business School's findings and recommendations to 'Revitalise Port Douglas.'

Since that time a number of local residents and business people have taken the first steps to move toward creating a more united community.

While still in its infancy, the 'project' to see the return of a prosperous Port Douglas has already achieved some important outcomes.

These include an agreement which was reached between Port Douglas Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Port Douglas and Daintree representatives, along with other key stakeholders within the community to establish an Economic Development Group.

A statement was released as a result of that agreement which read, "The participation by as many Port Douglas and greater Douglas region businesses in an economic development group is a vital step in bolstering the business health of the region, maximising co-operation and flow of ideas and support for future economic initiatives."

It was proposed that the new group will attempt to access government revenue streams and promote the interaction of businesses and marketing strategies "without duplication of resources."

Local solicitor, Martin Tranter, has also gone on the front foot to unite business sectors. Mr Tranter last month held the first of many meetings involving retailers, presented his plan for a collaborative approach to marketing the sector, and received a positive response from attendees.

The Newsport itself has been approached by advocates for change, Frank Frikker's group has shared their vision for the future, and the Port Douglas Community Garden members are actively progressing their project through a collective approach.

While these achievements provide a platform for future action, it is up to each of us to continue to stoke the fire to ensure complacency does not set in. As the MBS clock displayed on our home page shows, the clock is still ticking.
