Hazel Douglas dies

News of Hazel Douglas' death has sent the Douglas region into mourning as the lady described as an "incredible leader" passed away today after a long illness.

Hazel Douglas was from the Eastern Kuku Yulanji and was the founder of indigenous tourism in the region after establishing her own company, Native Guide Safari Tours. Ms Douglas was also a signatory for Native Title in the area.

Ms Douglas was also honoured during last year's 100th anniversary of International Women's Day where her name now adorns a room at the Port Douglas Community Centre.

Division 10 councillor and close friend Julia Leu was saddened by the news.

"She was an amazing role model for all people, indigenous and non-indigenous. She was dearly loved."
