Game slips from injury riddled Raiders

The Rattle 'n' Hum Reef Raiders played their second last home game of the year in front of the biggest crowd of the year against Southside.

Both teams were looking to get back into the winner's circle after last week's losses. In the first five minutes two Raiders' players were off injured, one with a badly sprained knee and the other with a dislocated shoulder.

This saw the visitors score while a player was getting attended to, the final pass going by him with the ref not stopping the match.

This seemed to kick the Raiders into gear and they went on to maintain ball control and field position. While making inroads in the defence, Nick Sherston scored off the back of the scrum and Grae Gilbert kicked the goal and put the Raiders in front.

But with some strange rulings being made Southside sneaked in front with a penalty just before the break.

The start of the second half saw the Raiders hit the field confident of taking the points, but Southside had other ideas and scored 15 minutes into the half.

With the extra points going wide the Raiders still could have come away with the win with a converted try. The tried their hardest but the ref wasn't helping with some bad calls and missed knock-ons which cost the Raiders possession and field position.

With these decisions going against them the Raiders' finally crumbled and let in a soft try with 10 minutes to go. This didn't deter the team as the last 10 minutes were played at a frantic pace only to see the final pass knocked on or stolen which handed the Raiders back to back losses, this time by 18 to 7.

The players that stood out for the Raiders were Matt Crockett and Jackson Demler. The Paddys Player of the Day went to Clint Kachel.

Next week will see the last home game for the year for the Raiders as they then take on four weeks of being on the road to make a run for the finals.

The raiders would just like to thank Port Douglas Laundry for their support of the home games and hopefully they'll get a win next weekend against Wanderers which will kick off at 3pm.
