No doldrums for Magic

Very light air from all points of the compass greeted the seven yachts that came to the line for Race 1 of the 2012 Poseidon Sailaway Club Championship Summer Series.

In a comical display for conditions typical of a Summer's morning, several boats lost all motion and drifted in circles on the flat sea trying desperately to capture the fickle breeze.

Eventually, with only two finishers, Magic claimed first ahead of Ann Sea.

Race 2 had a little more of the 15 to 20 knot breeze that had been predicted and the fleet enjoyed a good beat into the northerly breeze, this time comfortably completing the three laps of the windward leeward course in the allotted three hours.

Magic took line honours but had to settle for second place as Ann Sea took first ahead by 13 seconds on corrected time.

The results have Magic and Ann Sea tied on three points on the series ladder followed by Ice (11), Tau Ceti (12), Big Ears (13) Miriama (14) and Ruff Red (16).

A noticeable absentee was the Yacht Club's own boat and defending club champion, Port FM Mais Oui, with various members of last year’s winning crew unavailable.

However, the highlight of the day was seeing Miriama skippered by club veteran and sailing legend Henry Cotter and Big Ears skippered by Carolyn (Nod) Wilson joining the racing fleet. Nod having learnt to sail as part of the winning crew on Port FM Mais Oui in 2011.

Race 3 is on Saturday 11 February.
