Get to know your gym coaches

Today we speak with two more coaches from the Mossman & District Gymnastics Club and find out why they love getting involved in the popular sport.

Anysha Rankin

Erin Frizelle: What are your qualifications or position?
Anysha Rankin: Level 1 WAG Accredited Coach (included Senior First Aid Certification and Blue Card), Junior Coach.

EF: How long have you been actively involved in gymnastics?
AR: I competed as a gymnast from 2003 to 2006, then came back and did gymnastics in 2008 to 2009, then became a junior coach in 2010 to present.

EF: What is your greatest achievement in the sport?
AR: Coming first overall in regionals back when I was in year 5. But more recently I would say my greatest achievement would be becoming an accredited coach.

EF: What do you like about gymnastics?
AR: I enjoy many aspects of gymnastics. I like how it incorporates aspects of dance within the routines, but it is more focused on the skill through flexibility and strength of the individual gymnast.

EF: What advice do you have for upcoming gymnasts?
AR: I would say to keep on trying and practicing in order to become fitter, more flexible and stronger, but overall,  just have fun while you’re doing it.

Matilda Mellows

Erin Frizelle: What are your qualifications or position?
Matilda Mellows: Wag Level 4, that would be junior assistant coach.

EF: How long have you actively been involved in gymnastics?
MM: Six and a half years.

EF: What is your greatest achievement?
MM: Second overall in a Mareeba competition.

EF: What do you like about gymnastics?
MM: I really like gymnastics because you get the opporunity to go in competitions if you want and I enjoy the challenge of seeing how I compare to the other gymnasts.

EF:
Your advice to our upcoming gymnasts?
MM: To listen to the teachers and try your hardest always.
