Embarrassing Taipans smashed
The Taipans were woeful against the Gold Coast Blaze on Sunday night scoring just 49 points for the game (lowest score all season by any club) and falling out of the top four as a consequence.
Coach Fearney's assessment at the after match press conference was harsh but spot on. "We are embarrassed of that, we were smashed in every area."
Smashed they were as the Blaze ran with a full court press for most of the match and Cairns simply couldn't handle it.
Star point guard Jamar Wilson's stats read like this: 5 points (2/11 from the field), 0 rebounds, 1 turnover and 0 assists.
When your star import point guard has a big fat donut (0) in assists and the team has no answers for a full court press, it's fair to say the team will struggle to win those ones.
Let's hope Jamar responds with a better performance at home on Friday against Townsville as the outcome of that one will also help shape the top four and a loss will see the Snakes drop further from post season action.
In other NBL news Wollongong swooped on Ayinde Ubaka and ironically his first game in Hawks colours was against his old club - the Melbourne Tigers.
After being sensationally sacked by Tigers owner Seamus McPeake (also known as the 'Fat Controller') Ubaka responded against his former club with 15 points, 3 steals, 3 assists and 4 rebounds - which are healthy stats and the sort of stuff we need from Wilson.
Ubaka had his cheeky grin back on as he helped add to the woes of a dejected looking Tigers outfit and God only knows how Trev Gleeson can pull his troops out of this slump.
The Tigers players look like they don't wanna be there and there is definitely problems in that camp. Maybe they are all nervous the Fat Controller will pull another tantrum and instantly tear up their contracts!
I bet the three former Taipans wish they never left the far north now and all I can say is THAT'S KARMA!
I've said it before that Ubaka, Dorsey and Dillon all owed Cairns at least one more year to see if we could go one better and win the title. A bit of loyalty could have saved the day.
Perth and defending champs NZ are the only shoe-ins for a finals berth with five teams vying for the last two spots. Cairns need to turn things around quickly and I think they can.
Go Snakes!
