Participants in next week’s Zumba world record attempt will be assisting cancer support and research as they shake and shimmy their way into history.

Relay for Life is one of the region's most well-supported charity initiatives and has joined forces with the Zumba event to help clinch the Guinness World Record.

“We have a team of 12 people aged 16 to 60 and we’ll all be there,” said Relay for Life participant Kerrie Langdon of team Pina FordeLada.

Ms Langdon said she hoped to see many other Relay for Life teams taking part in the record-breaking Zumba class.

“Relay for Life is all about giving back to the community, while raising awareness of cancer and raising funds for the Cancer Council,” she said.

Admission to the Zumba event is free, but participants are encouraged to bring a little spare change to contribute to Relay for Life through a donation or purchase of merchandise.

Cairns’ Zumba world record attempt will be held at Fogarty Park on Tuesday, February 21. Gates open at 3pm, close at 5.30pm and the class will start at 5.45pm.

To qualify the record, all participants need to join in a 30-minute beginner-level Zumba class.

For the record, the largest Zumba class involved 2,012 participants and was achieved by Zumbawear UK in Twickenham in the UK on 11 June 2011.
