Heavenly bodies align for parade

Port Douglas Carnivale organisers have announced the theme for the 2012 Macrossan Street Parade will be “Heavenly Bodies”.

General manager Ken Dobbs said the theme had been inspired in part by the astrological event of the solar eclipse on 14 November 2012, but it had many interpretations and lent itself to a wide range of expressions.

“We canvassed opinion and many suggestions came in to support the Eclipse, so ‘Heavenly Bodies’ is an expression which can define this year’s street parade theme and encompass the moon, the stars, signs of the Zodiac, and the Eclipse when heavenly bodies move around the sun!” he said.

Mr Dobbs said the term was broad enough to encompass all aspects of the Douglas community.

“If you consider it, the reference could be a corporate body, or a dance troupe or band. If you’re looking for inspiration google it, a heavenly body is an object occurring naturally not made by man, but I think we can add some hand made touches and some humour to this year’s floats and festivity.”

The 2012 prizes for floats are:

Best Overall Float $1000
Best Themed Float $500
Best Commercial Float $250
Best Community Float $250

Last year there were over 60 floats in the parade and the winning float was Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre. Now is the time for groups and businesses to plan their 2012 float so they participate in the biggest annual event in Port Douglas.
