Donations to local charities not trivial

The generosity and community smarts of four enterprising locals has produced a knock-on effect for local charities.

It all started at a recent K-Star Trivia night, a popular and free twice-weekly social event which not only attracts trivia buffs, but also varied prizes donated by local business for contestants to win.

Late last year, all attending trivia buffs’ names went into the barrel to win a Sexy Back 12-week Boot Camp, valued at $250, from Nick Carling at Actin Fitness.

“It was to be given as a Christmas prize during late December and early January for K-Star Trivia participants who had attended evenings at both the Central Hotel and the Beach Shack,” K-Star (aka Kevin Eldridge) said.

“Out of more than 50 contenders, Roisin Allen of the Douglas Shire Sustainability Group won the prize, but decided she wouldn’t use it.

“So she offered up the prize for sale, with the proceeds going to Rainforest Rescue and The Port Douglas Community Garden.”

Emma Cummins of Macrossan St Pharmacy then jumped on the opportunity and paid $100 for the prize.

Rainforest Rescue and Port Douglas Community Garden both subsequently received $50 donations.

“It just goes to show how there is a flow-on effect when local businesses get behind the community,” Kevin said.

Meanwhile, Wednesday’s K-Star Trivia nights have been relocated from the Central Hotel to the Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club, with full bar and bistro, from 7pm.

Thursday night sessions will continue at The Beach Shack in Four Mile from 6.30pm
