Debt to restrict infrastructure spend

The LNP candidate for Cook, David Kempton, visited Port Douglas for a function at Salsa Bar & Grill yesterday, where he took the opportunity to outline some of the issues he saw facing the region.

Among those in attendance were representatives of the Port Douglas Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Port Douglas and Daintree, a number of local business people, faithful LNP voters and those who had yet to decide on which box to tick come the State election on 24 March.

Mr Kempton is seeking to dislodge Jason O'Brien from the Cook electorate, and highlighted a lack of major infrastructure spending, the cost of living, aged care, and losing skilled workers to mining areas saying Mossman was particularly affected.

Mr Kempton said should the LNP secure government it would face the prospect of repaying the State deficit of $85 billion, which would restrict future plans for infrastructure.

He said Campbell Newman has made it clear that ministers under an LNP government would be made wholly accountable for the performance of their portfolio.

"If something goes wrong they'll be sacked," Mr Kempton said.
