Cow Bay land picked for protection

Efforts are underway to purchase land in Cow Bay to assist in the protection of cassowaries and cycads in the Daintree Rainforest.

Kelvin Davies, CEO of Rainforest Rescue, a not-for-profit organisation who protects and re-establishes rainforest in high conservation areas, said they are closing in on the amount needed to purchase the property.

"I’m still short of my target of $112,000 to secure the purchase of our latest rainforest property," he said. "We are so close to achieving this target, but I still need to raise $16,158.40."

The land is located at Lot 8, Buchanan Creek Road, Cow Bay, and Mr Davies said purchasing the parcel of land will secure its protection.

"One of the many reasons that the board and I have chosen to buy this property is that it is one of the few left in this area that can be built upon.

"It has an existing development approval, and if we don’t buy it someone else will. But they will be more interested in clearing the land and developing it," Mr Davies said.

Mr Davies has put the call out for donations to enable the purchase.
