Young Raiders not short of skill
Friday night saw the Under 14 Reef Raiders head down to Mann Street to take on Wanderers in the clash for third and fourth spots overall.
With the Raiders just fielding a side it was going to be tough without any subs, but would see all 15 players get full game time.
The Raiders went out confident and started playing strongly which saw them have the ball in good field position and Kienan Grogan score his first try.
Wanderers hit top gear and put two tries back to back on the Raiders in the next 15 minutes. Then an injury to one of the Wanderers' main players seemed to pull them back and this was an opportunity for the Raiders to hit back before the break. They did thru Grogan again taking the score 14-12 in the Raiders' favour.
The second half was all one way traffic the Raiders' way. Bryce Caltabino was making huge yards with his strong runs, and Fraser Cotton confused the defence with his sleight of hand and also his chip kicks which lead to Matt Chesterfield scoring his first try of the year.
The forward pack consisting of Lockie Cowe, Tully Cartwright, Adon Trewick and Daniel Walsh were making great inroads into the defence with their pick and drives and solid tackling.
Dane Jenkins at half back was controlling everything from the back of the ruck and picking who was getting the ball.
The coaches were more pleased with Glen McFarlene, Angus Dickson and Aaron Dunwell's talk and cover defence which stopped Wanderers' raids on the Raiders' line.
The final score was 29-19 to the Raiders. Try scorers were Kienan Grogan (3), Matt chesterfield, and Fraser Cotton who only converted 2 out of 5 conversion attempts.
The players of the day were Fraser Cotton, Dane Jenkins and the Port Putt Putt Man of the Match went to Kienan Grogan.
The coaches of the 14's would like to thank all the sponsors for the year and all the parents that helped out and all the kids that pulled a jersey on for the Reef Raiders.
The presentation night will be this Friday at the sports complex in Port Douglas starting from 6pm.
