Mossman Gorge community goes pink
Bamanga Bubu Ngadimunku Inc, the representative entity of the Mossman Gorge Indigenous Community, last month held a special community event by hosting a Breast Cancer Awareness Day.
Held on 20 November, the day aimed to increase the awareness of Breast Cancer within Indigenous communities.
The event provided a forum for information to be shared and included the importance of investing time in early preventative actions, and regular discussions around Breast Cancer with medical officials.
“Breast Cancer Awareness Day is vitally important in providing education and awareness around the fact that Breast Cancer doesn’t discriminate in terms of age, gender, race, or social standing,” said Bamanga Bubu Ngadimunku Inc Chief Executive Officer, Peterson Opio.
“This day also highlighted the need to not only focus on those who are battling with this illness, but also providing assistance and guidance to the families who are supporting their loved ones during their fight with Breast Cancer.”
With the support of the various Cape York Welfare Reform service providers as well as BreastScreen Queensland and the Cancer Council Queensland, festivities included a Breast Cancer awareness seminar, a community sausage sizzle, and a bake sale.
The various service providers also participated in the day by decorating their offices and wearing pink to work in support of the Mossman Gorge Breast Cancer Day.
Due to its success, with the event attracting more than 20 community members, Mr Opio has already confirmed that the group will next year aim to build on the positive outcomes achieved in 2012.
All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Cancer Council to continue the fight against Breast Cancer.
