Mackay Sugar has donated $2,000 to the Mossman Community Centre to help cover the Centre's emergency relief costs throughout the festive period.

The Centre continues to fight for emergency relief funding from the State Government at a time when the Centre is "inundated" with requests for help.

"Donations from anyone are welcome," said president of the Mossman Community Centre, Pat Carbis. "Every little bit helps."

Mackay Sugar Communications Manager Lorelei van Dalen said the donations would benefit a number of individuals and families in need of a helping hand this Christmas.

“Our local charities and community service groups, such as the Mossman Community Centre, play an important role in our community, particularly over the festive season, so we are extremely proud to contribute to their invaluable services and show our support of those less fortunate,” she said.

At the cheque presentation yesterday, Mackay Sugar CEO Quinton Hildebrand told representatives of the Mossman Community Centre that his company recognised the importance of the work done by the Centre.

"I'd like to acknowledge the work of staff and volunteers (of the Mossman Community Centre).

"It's the ultimate to be able to get people to willingly contribute and you have to sell the vision and what can be achieved and get people passionately engaged. I take my hat off to you."

The Christmas donation is one of six provided to community charities and groups in both Mossman and Mackay as part of Mackay Sugar’s Community Support Program.

A donation of $1,500 was also provided to Mackay’s St Vincent De Paul Society, Red Cross, The Salvation Army, Anglicare and Lifeline.

Mackay Sugar is also conducting its annual Charity Christmas Gift Appeal, with employees from each of the company’s three Mackay mills contributing various items to be donated to families nominated by The Salvation Army on 13 December.
