Last shots fired at Mossman

by Steve Cruickshank

Saturday afternoon saw four keen shooters turn out for a very challenging 400 metre range with a vigorous mirage and a consistent breeze blowing up the range.

This breeze gave the shooters a constant challenge due to the target seemingly dancing all over the place.

First on the mound was Gus Gusmeroli shooting in the F Class division (308 with bipod and sandbag and telescopic sights). Gus opened with two 4’s, he cut them and then went on to squeeze off some very impressive shots with a final tally of 53/1 out of a possible 60 in the 10 shot match.

Next down was Rob Wearne in the well contested division of Full Bore ( manually supported 308 with open sights).  Rob opened with two 3’s which he gave orders to cut and then went on to shoot a very inconsistent round peppered with 4’s and 5’s with one super V Bull (dead centre) to post a score of 44/1 out of a possible 50.

Rick Mischlewski was the next on the mound in the Full Bore challenge. Rick just couldn’t get into a rhythm and was having trouble finding the centre with only two bullets getting close. Rick’s final score was a little lower than anticipated giving him 35 out of a possible 50.

Next on the range was the club’s veteran Full Bore shooter, Ron Schild. Ron opened with 4’s and went on to shoot a swag of 4’s with a few 5’s and one V Bull giving him a final score of 42/1.

Gus Gusmeroli was back on the mound in the second 400 metre range. Gus opened with 4’s and then went on to shoot a handful of very good shots with two Super Bulls and two Bullseyes and three 5’s giving Gus a final tally of 55/2 out of a possible 65 in the 11 shot match.

Rob Wearne was back to try his hand on the second 400 metre range. Rob opened with a super V Bull and a Bullseye then went on to shoot some mixed scores with some very average shots.

Rob just couldn’t get comfortable in his shooting jacket or with his position lying on the mound and that subsequently gave him final score of 44/2 out of a possible 55 in the 11 shot match.

Rick Mischlewski was back on the mound in his second attempt to pull a cat out of the bag. Rick opened with a 3 and a 4, opting to keep the 4. He then squeezed off a mixed bag of shots unable to find the centre in the 11 shot match. Rick’s final score was 48 out of a possible 55.

Back on the mound for his second range was Ron Schild. Ron opened with a 5 and a 3, keeping both he then went on to shoot a near replica of his first round, with more fives and more threes giving him a second round score of 42 out of a possible 55.

In summary, Gus Gusmeroli took out the honours in the F Class Comp with a final tally of 108/3 out of a possible 126. Rob Wearne took the honours in the Full Bore comp with a final score of 88/3 out of a possible 105. Ron Schild came in second with a final tally of 84/1 and Rick Mischlewski third with 83 out of a possible 105.
