Barron too good for U14 Raiders

The last game of the regular season for the Under 14 Reef Raiders was played under lights at home against the second placed Barron Trinity.

The Raiders went into the match confident of a win as they had beaten Barron once this year. But it was Barron who started the stronger and put a try on first out wide, then they scored a soft try again to take a 14 points to nil lead.

After the restart the Raiders started to use their shoulders to tackle and this forced a few mistakes from Barron. These unforced errors saw the Raiders get the ball in Barron's red zone and this lead to a try to Kienan Grogan. The conversion took the score 14 to 7 in Barron's favour at the break.

The Raiders came out positive that they could take the match from the opposition, but with some silly errors and missed tackles the Raiders let in another try.

Barron should have put more points on the board but some great cover defence from Quinlyn Cannon and Tom Henly kept the Raiders stay.

The match was played at both ends but neither team could score until Cannon crossed for his token try of the game. Barron eventually went over to skip out to a two try lead and this is how the game finished with Barron winning 36-14.

The Raiders team was lead by Tom Allen whose tackling was outstanding for his size. Doug Parkes up front was strong, Aaron Dunwell who was great all night when asked to play three different positions, and Dane Jenkins at halfback was trying his heart out to get the forwards moving.

But the Port Putt Putt Man of the Match went to Fraser Cotton whose control of the backline and first up tackling was why he got the award.

This week sees the Raiders head to Cairns for the last game of the year with all the finals to be played at Mann Street.
