The 2012 Cairns Tennis International from 25 August to 2 September is set to serve up some exciting action later this month, and yesterday the Australian Pro Tour tournament was officially launched at the Cairns International Tennis Centre.

“We look forward to welcoming players from across Australia and the world to the Cairns region for this great sporting event,” said Mayor of Cairns Regional Council, Bob Manning.

“This event will again put Cairns in the spotlight and adds to our reputation for hosting quality sporting events as we have demonstrated in the past.

“I can only hope that the current beautiful weather we are experiencing remains for the tournament, and the competitors and their support crews will have some time to enjoy our hospitality and tropical winter climate.”

The Cairns Tennis International is a men’s and women’s tournament on the Australian Pro Tour, a series of international events that act as a springboard to the global tennis stage by providing vital ranking points and experience for the tennis stars of tomorrow.

With a prize purse of USD$40,000, a strong field is expected. South Australian and current Australian Open junior champion, Luke Saville, and Fed Cup team member and Australian No. 4, Olivia Rogowska, have already confirmed their attendance.

“Cairns Tennis International has attracted some of Australia’s top players, including Australia’s Casey Dellacqua (WA), who clinched the women’s title in 2011,” said Matt Richards, Cairns International tournament director.

“The tournament will be staged at the Cairns International Tennis Centre, a world-class venue that hosted the 2010 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group Play-Off tie between Belgium and Australia.

“Cairns Tennis International will treat locals to some exciting international tennis, plus provide a great opportunity for our leading Australian players to further develop their international ranking leading into the Australian summer of tennis.

James Lemke (Vic), the 2011 men’s champ, will be back to defend his title, and we look forward to announcing an Australian tennis legend that will be in attendance at the 2012 tournament,” Mr Richards added.
