Sugar Fest success
The Sugar Festival weekend was a huge success with a big turnout of teams and representatives from around the district.
Locals and visitors alike expressed gratitude and praise for the sponsors, Mossman Central Mill and Mossman Memorial Bowls Club for putting on such a successful carnival of bowls.
On Thursday the ladies graded pairs was played with Maree Crees and Val Robinson (26) defeating Janice Brlyack and Dot Kostyrka (20). Maree and Val will now play Jan Gard and Estelle O’Rourke in the final on Thursday.
Graded triples will also start on Thursday with Zina Girgenti, Carole Maxted and Dot Kosi verses Bev Zillfleisch, Maria Mijo and Sonia Edwards. Social bowls was also played with Estelle O’Rourke, Glenise Sharp and Judy Maxwell winning (2+14). The raffle winner was Kaye Dean.

Forty two ladies enjoyed a fun day for the Friday Sugar Festival day. The winners were Joan Day’s team with Linda McCartney’s team taking second prize and third place went to Sylvia Patterson’s team. Zina Girenti’s team won the encouragement award.
In mixed bowls on Saturday Cooktown shone through to win the day. Second place went to Tony Brylack’s local team while third place went to another local team skippered by Col Maxted.
Sunday’s men’s competition saw a clear win by Yungaburra while a close decision saw West Cairns narrowly take second place followed by Mareeba in third place.
Next Saturday will be Men’s Jackpot bowls as usual with registrations closing at midday for a 1pm start. Also on Saturday, Club selected threes competition will be played between B Wolland, R Gard and G Bolton vs Doug Pitt, J Sellars and C Pitt.
Sunday will see the semi-finals handicap competition between B Wolland (-5) and J Sellars (+4).
