Missed chances cost Dragons 3rds

Friday night saw a game between Douglas united and JCU in the FNQ Football Third Division at Cassowary Park. The game would be a huge disappointment for Douglas as very few things went right for them and they would suffer their first home defeat in the division.

Early on in the game Douglas seemed to be struggling as JCU had two great chances within the first ten minutes to take a lead, hitting the crossbar on both occasions.

Soon after it would be Adam Wright clean through for Douglas but his shot was hit at the keeper, the rebound falling to Danny Houghton whose shot was pushed onto the crossbar.

Adam Wright then had a great chance for Douglas when Nick Despres cut a ball back for him, three yards out with an empty net staring him in the face, Adam simply missed the ball and the game remained at 0-0.

Douglas had been struggling to hold onto the ball for any prolonged period of time and as the first half came to a close they could be seen giving the ball away far too easily.

As the second half got under way it was Douglas who had numerous chances to take the lead. Several long shots failed to find the target, until Joe Fox hit a top class volley which was somehow saved by the JCU keeper to keep the game still at 0-0.

Adam Wright, the Dragons' top scorer must have thought this was not to be his game as another chance half way through the second half came and went. It was then the turn of Ben Syrette to have a shot but his effort would just clear the crossbar.

As time and chances went by Douglas seemingly became on edge and frustrated that this game would end without them accumulating the three points.

Then a moment they had feared. A controversial penalty decision gave JCU the chance to score from the penalty and take the game to 1-0. which they did.

With around ten minutes left Douglas tried to get the game back at 1-1 but when Ross Hardie failed to get a shot off with his left foot from seven yards out, Douglas faced the reality that they had just played a game for ninety minutes with numerous chances but due to not being able to convert even one of the chances, they would lose to a much weaker side at home in the shape of JCU.

The Dragons will now face Southside away this Friday night at 8pm.
