Lucky seven for Dragons

Friday night saw a game between Douglas United and Southside in the FNQ football Third Division at Southside. The game would see Douglas return to winning ways quite emphatically, on a night that could of seen Douglas take the scoring into double figures if it was not for some lack luster finishing at times throughout the game.

From the start to the end of the game on Friday it would be Douglas controlling and dominating the game in every area. However, early on the football may of been up to scratch but the finishing was certainly not.

Adam Wright going clean through blasting the ball over the crossbar was one of the chances squandered early on with a host of others.

It would be Adam who would finally knock down the Southside wall of defence around the thirty minute mark with a first time shot form around twenty five yards. On a night that saw eight goals you could easily argue this would be the most impressive of them all.

Going in at the half leading by one goal Douglas had become aware of the fact the quality of football would not get them the win but the quality of finishing. Assured of the fact the chances would keep coming they would have to find their finishing boots to put this game to bed.

Almost right after the restart Douglas got to work on finishing off their chances. First up it was Danny Houghton stealing in at the back post for an easy tap in to take the game to 2-0.

Then it was Ross Hardie for Douglas taking the game to 3-0. Finding the ball at his feet around twelve yards out he showed some neat footwork to evade two challenges before a nice little dink over the keeper for his first goal of the season to pretty much put the game beyond Southside.

Jason Fox would then take the game to 4-0 for Douglas. Along with his goal Jason provided a lot of energy for Douglas on the night. James Turner on his first start since an MCL injury ten weeks ago would finish with the outside of his left boot to make it five.

Then Adam Wright, the top scorer in the division, would get back amongst the action taking it to 6-0 for the Dragons with a very tidy finish.

Then a moment that caught the Douglas team by surprise. Southside, playing a very clever free kick in around the Douglas wall, would lead to a ball across the box and a first time volley which would settle nicely in the back of the net to bring the game to 6-1.

With a couple minutes left to play there would be time for one final goal for Douglas when James Turner grabbed his second on the night with a half volley from around 10 yards out to take the game to the final score of 7-1.

The Paddys Irish Bar Man of the match Award would go to Nick Despres who did not get on the score sheet for the Dragons but had a solid game at the back and was also a huge influence in setting the wheels in motion for numerous Dragon attacks.

This Friday Douglas play host in a top of the table clash against Dimbulah.
