Heroic efforts in junior AFL finals

UNDER 8

Well the year finished with a bang on Sunday morning, with the mighty Port Douglas Crocs playing their grand final at home in perfect conditions in front of a packed home crowd at the Croc Pit.

Prior to the opening bounce, the race was on for who would run through the banner first with Colby ”Crackers” Taylor just pipping Ethan ”Marcou” Scott with a flying Sam ”Phil Carmen” Wall third.

The “Don’t think – Do!” phrase was issued by Coach Matt Scott before the game and did the boys respond! Dashing Angus ”Winmar” Van Rouyan ran riot in the first term and was well assisted in his partners in crime Tam ”Ball” Nguyen and the ever consistent Kai ”Plugger” Durie.

Sneaky rovers Kalan ”Crunch” Poole opened the second quarter with a long bomb at goal and the defensive forward pressure of young Luke “Buckley and Hayden Lamb” Caswell brought special mention from the coaching staff.

Solid ruck work from crowd favourite Hugo ”Boss” Ellison ensured first usage of the ball to his speedy on ballers lead by Daniel ”Boon” Harrington and the deadly left foot of Taj ”Brownless” Anderson.

After final presentations of awards from AFL Cairns, the boys were keen to grab their free Solo and start preparing for mad Monday celebrations.

All players received coach’s awards this week.

UNDER 10

What a spectacular home ground day to finish our Junior Crocs' Under 10s season.  The team tore through the finals banner straight into a close game against the Hawks.

Scott Cooper, Sam Corrie, Dean Laurence and Kye Durie kept the pressure on the Hawks all game along with Jake Sherwell and Harry Walker.

Asher Shaw had a great game with the team to show he is definitely ready to be a Junior Croc next season.  Excellent play also from our goal kickers Anthony Long (2), Jamie Hudson (1) and Jacob Rich (1).

Cairns AFL presented medals to all players for their contribution to the season.  Medals were also given to Jacob Rich and Harry Walker.  We look forward to our presentation day on 1 September 2012.

UNDER 16

The Port Douglas Under 16s played off in the first semi final at Cazaly's on Friday night against North Cairns. The boys had good form leading up to the match having beaten the three top teams in a row to get to the final.

The team, boosted by the return of Brett McKeown from injury, got of to a slow start with Norths kicking the first goal of the game putting our defence under pressure.

Liam Edwards at full back with help from Ethan McCullough, Nathan Evans and Brett McKeown kept the Crocs in the game by out-playing their opponents in defence.

With Jake Muia leading by example going in hard for the ball his team mates Chasley Nandy, Ashley Davidson and Aiden Alberts got the ball forward to a red hot Charlie Williams who kicked some great long goals to keep the boys in the game.

The second half saw the team start 20 points down on the score board and as they had all season they continued to fight the game out to the end.

The last quarter saw the Crocs attacking the goals with some near misses costing the team a chance to get back to level scores.  Unfortunately the final siren had Norths ahead 8.6.54 to Crocs 5.3.33.

Goal kickers for Port Charlie 4 and Chaseley 1. Best players Jake Muia, Charlie Williams, Liam Edwards, Brett McKeown, Ethan McCullough and Jackson Riley.

With a third of the team playing AFL for the first time this season the team can hold there heads high and be proud of their efforts to make the finals.

The club would like to thank the coaches Greg and Mitchell Nicholson and team manager Sam Edwards for there there dedication each week to the team.
