Dragons grind out win

Last Friday night saw a game between Douglas United and Leichhardt in the FNQ Football Third division at Cassowary Park. The game would be a somewhat scrappy affair with few chances for either side but the Dragons would do just enough on the night to walk away with the three points.

In one of the more uneventful games for the Dragons this season the game did produce one big talking point early on.

When a Leichhardt defender seemingly hit the ball with his hand the referee gave the penalty despite some claims from the Leichhardt team that the defender had been pushed in the back. Despite the protest the penalty stood for Douglas.

Adam Wright would step up and convert the penalty to take the game 1-0 in the Dragons' favour.

Through the first half it was the Dragons who looked the more likely to add to the scoring, but one moment that did stand out for Leichhardt was when Douglas keeper Heath Melton almost let the ball slip from his grasp. Luckily for the Dragons, Leichhardt did not react quickly enough to take advantage of the slip.

As the first half was coming to an end Daniel Ferrero was put clean through with a chance to make it 2-0. Unfortunately his shot was put just wide of the post and the game remained at 1-0 at the half.

Incidents in the second half were once again minimal. The best chance of the second half fell to Adam Wright for the Dragons but after showing some quick feet his one on one opportunity was put wide.

Douglas and Leichhardt really struggled to find any real form in the second half as the game became a scrappy midfield battle with both teams going into some heavy challenges.

One of the few half chances came way of James Turner whose shot from outside the box was saved well by the keepers' legs and unfortunately for the Dragons the rebound fell to Leichhardt who cleared the ball easily.

As the game came to an end Douglas would be happy with the win but with the finals just around the corner they know some big performances will need to be called upon to have any chance of getting a win.

The Paddy’s Irish Bar Man of the Match award would go to Eugene Brown who would command the midfield very well throughout the night.

Tonight Douglas will play at Cassowary Park against Marlin Coast in the final league game of the regular season with an 8pm kick off.
