Dimbulah down nervous Dragons

Friday night saw a game between Douglas United and Dimbulah in the FNQ Football Third Division at Cassowary Park. The game would live up to the occasion and prove to be an exciting and dramatic

affair but unfortunately for the Dragons the result would just edge in the way of Dimbulah.

The game started brightly for the Dragons who created the first real chance of the game when a cross into the box was met by Ross Hardie's well timed header to be superbly saved by the Dimbulah keeper.

Not long after the same move would lead to the opening goal for Douglas. James Turner beat his man and then crossed the ball into the box and this time, after the ball bounced off a Dimbulah defender, Ross Hardie kept his nerve and finished well for the Dragons to take the game to 1-0.

Dimbulah would struggle to create any real chances in the first half and if Douglas had a little bit more luck they could have been more then one up with numerous half chances just evading them.

At the half it would be 1-0 to the Dragons who felt in a very commanding position judging by the balance of the game.

After half time it did not take long for a big turning point to happen. A Dimbulah striker, able to turn Dragons' defender Ben Syrett, was clipped and fell to the ground. The referee was probably

justified in pointing to the spot for a penalty to Dimbulah. The striker made no mistake in taking the game to 1-1.

This goal shook the Dragons right to their foundations as they seemed to be now playing within themselves and feeling pressure on every pass they made.

You look like you've got something to say? Why not write a Letter to the Editor?

It did not take long before the nerves would tell and the Dragons would be switched off for the next Dimbulah goal. A shot that was not closed down would beat the keeper at his near post and put Dimbulah 2-1 up.

The Dragons would struggle to create any clear cut chances at this point in the game as James Turner would let some long range efforts fly that would be well saved, and Adam Wright would be working hard up top waiting for a clear chance that just did not seem to be coming his way.

Then, Dimbulah produced a special goal as they managed to score a header from the edge of the box right into the top corner. This would take the game to 3-1 with around fifteen minutes left.  Douglas seemed completely deflated and the game seemed to be as good as over.

However, in the last fifteen minutes Douglas showed some real character. They produced some good build up play and a few minutes after going down 3-1 a good ball was played into the box and it found its way to Joe Fox. Joe would take one touch and finish well to bring the game back to 3-2 in Dimbulah's favour.

The Dragons had ten minutes to try and rescue this game. Douglas would have the ball for most of the remaining time, but when a few half chances were not taken and a penalty shout had not been given, they had to face the reality that this game was just one step too much on the night. The game would end 3-2 Dimbulah.

The "Paddys Irish Bar" Man of the match award would go to Daniel Ferrero who had a solid game at the back for Douglas.

This Friday Dragons play host to Leichhardt at Cassowary Park with a 8pm kick off.
