Classical guitar comes to Clink

The next Courtyard Music event will be on Sunday September 9, as usual at 6:30pm in The Clink Theatre's courtyard, and the main act will be Johannes Selhofer, a flamenco, gypsy jazz and classical music guitar player.

As a youngster the 26 yr old Johannes learned guitar basics from a fisherman in the far northern region of Queensland on remote Restoration Island (better known as the place where Captain Bligh guided his crew through the reef to safety after the infamous Mutiny on the Bounty).

Johannes’s influences in those days were bands like Metallica, Tool and Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

He later began playing the steel string guitar, experimenting with finger styles and other forms of music including blues and Jazz and folk tunes. However he eventually tired of using finger and thumb picks so he sold all his instruments, bought a Nylon string classic and began teaching himself classical and flamenco guitar.

Johannes took private lessons to improve his technique and is now lauded for his versatility and style.

After a few years he experimented with other instruments including the flute and cello. He has a one man band performance in mind involving the Cello, Flute, Guitar, Glockenspiel, as well as some simple percussive instruments all to be performed using a loop station.

He is interested in collaborative music no matter what the genre yet very much appreciates the craft of focusing on one style in all of its forms and subtleties.

His music mainly focuses on Flamenco, Classical, Jazz, and contemporary ethereal styles of music which evolved from his early folk influences.

His greatest inspirations are Paco de Lucia, John Williams, Tool, Sigur Ros, Joanna Newsome, Shpongle and Kurt Rosenwinkle.
