Agony and ecstasy in junior rugby

UNDER 7

This week at Jones Park the Under 7 Sharkies played against Brothers and Edmonton with an undermanned side of only seven players for our last games of the season.

In the first game Mossman defeated Brothers with four tries to three.  Against Edmonton the team came away with another win scoring five tries to three.  Try scorers on the day were David Neller (3), Jack Hatfield (2), Halli Jenkins (2) and Matthias Jackonia.

Man of the Match for these games goes to Saxon Ferris for great ball running and offloading, as well as Halli Jenkins who played a tough game in both attack and defence.

Special mention goes to Fletcher MacDonald who plays consistently well every week for his team and Saxton Vizard who was unwell on the day and still turned up to support his team mates.

Thank you to parents who made the effort all season to support training and travelling to games with your kids and a special thank you to the coaches, Petrina Nella and Matty Hatfield for your time and effort with the kids this season.  You guys are very much appreciated by the Under 7 Sharkies and their families.

UNDER 11

The Under 11s are rapt to have achieved their goal of a place in the 2012 grand final with a hard fought win against rivals Brothers Blue.

With both teams were evenly matched a great game of footy was played.  Although the local boys remain undefeated this season, Brothers have shown when our boys continue to turn over possession and do not complete their sets, they can be scored against.

Playing against a much bigger opposition you really have to admire the boys' commitment to their corridor defence tackling themselves to a standstill.

The coach was reluctant to single out any one player for praise as the team continues to gel with a core group and new players stepping up as a football side.

The team now has a week off to train and nail their drills especially ironing out bad habit of starting games slowly and poor ball security. They will meet the winner of Brothers and Suburbs in the big one.

The pressure is off as the boys are proud to have made the decider and a premiership would be a feat the Sharkies dared to dream of at the start of the season.

Special mention to outstanding side line support from family, friends and supporters. It really lifted the team when refs' decisions went against them and the game got really tough. The players, with their great sporting attitude on and off the field, did themselves proud.

UNDER 12

The two top teams in Under 12s played a tough game for a position in the grand final. Mossman played Southern Suburbs at Mann St for some edge of your seat entertaining football.

The boys played a great defensive first half with some of the best playing they had done all year. A try by Jayden Baldwin saw Mossman in the lead in the first half.

All the parents were quiet when Zachary Osborne had to kick from the side line and a cheer went up when his conversion was successful.

An incident on the sideline distracted some of the boys and it was disheartening when they had 10 penalties in 20 metres.  The final score was Suburbs defeating Mossman 18 to 6.

UNDER 13

The Under 13s played against Edmonton Storm in the knockout semi on Saturday and absolutely played their hearts out in a very see-sawing game.

The Sharks got out to an early 8-0 lead but let the Storm get back into the game with some simple errors giving away prime field position. There was nothing in it at half time and the Sharks looked like they may be able to hang on and progress through to the next semi final.

But with only one reserve on the bench the boys were running out of petrol fast. With only minutes remaining Wayne Oui just missed nabbing an intercept where he would have gone in under the posts to put the Sharks on even terms with the Storm.

It was not to be and even though the Sharks never stopped trying to get over the line the time ran out and the brave young lads bowed out of the semi's with their heads held high.

The final score was an agonising 26-22.

Every young man on the field for the Sharks that day deserved to get an award but man of the match for the last time this year went to 'Kamikaze' Oui.

Thanks to the Under 13s for being great kids and we hope you come back to play again next year. Pat yourselves on the back for a fantastic effort on Saturday you did yourselves, family and coach proud.
