Action heats up in junior netball

The Douglas Junior Netball competition started with the Pythons playing the Wildcatz, and the Pythons flew into full swing from start to finish.

Fauve Salleras, a surprise asset in the goal circle, scored two quick goals and grabbed some great intercepts. Hannah Durie and Koreena Minniecon kept the Wildcatz at bay and Logan Buzza stopped passes everywhere.

The Wildcatz had Jordan Scott's defensive skills keeping them on the Pythons tails.  Ebony Bland and Myah Lowenstein-Jones (shooting Goal of the Match) took control and proved unstoppable in the second quarter.

The second half was even and low scoring as the defence from both teams kept the scorers out of the ring. The Wildcatz' defence is improving week to week with Paige Bellero in GD proving to be a weapon.

In the end the Pythons were too strong "slithering" their way to victory.  Final score 7-1.

The Net Set Go girls played the Gladiators and a great game was enjoyed by all. The Nettas chose to keep their team together and with the help of an extra Gladiator on their side they managed to perform brilliantly.

Netta's Edie Thurtell and Gladiators' Heidi Pashen were the standout players representing their teams proudly.  The match ended in a two all draw cementing the Nettas' place in the Douglas Junior competition.

The 12/under competition was played on Court 1 with the Diamonds playing the Red Hot Peppers, and the Diamonds sparkled and were strong from the first siren playing as a well tuned team, slick passing and very confident finishing at goal.

The Peppers' defence worked overtime and the team turned up the heat at every opportunity but could not stop the Diamonds from running away with the game.

Diamonds' players’ choice was Jaime Thurtell and best and fairest was Kyah Francis. For the Peppers Jennifer Bellero and Kiara Mae-Gaddes took the honours.  Final score 34-5.

The game of the round was played between the Poison Apples and the Miallo Allstars, and both teams came out fighting with the Apples taking an early lead.

In the second half the Allstars made a come-back with fire in their bellies and after a hard fought last quarter the game ended a 7-7 tie.  The Allstars' standout players were Jenna Kerswell,  Kystal Schultz and Matilda Mellows. For the Apples Tiah McLean, Denby Woods and Jemma Fasano were best on court.

In the 14-16 competition the Reps 12s played the Breakers on Court 1. The Reps, in fine from from their fantastic win last weekend in the Tableland carnival, were a force to be reckoned with against their older rivals.

They shot four goals to one by half time and were slick and fast and continued this pace until the final siren.

The Breakers rallied hard as a team with some strong intercepts and great defence.  Best players for the Reps were Lana Baxter and Piper Adams and for the Breakers Jess Viola and Lucy Webster.

Final score Reps 12  def. the Breakers 4.

The Fusion team played the Dynamite and the Fusion were slow to start shooting only four goals to ten in the first half. Rachael Goodwin was strong in defence for the Fusion and Elle Kadwell played a great game.

The team shot eight goals in the third quarter but the Dynamite team were not letting their lead slip too far with the team feeding the goal circle and Marley Cairns and Bronte Lowenstein-Jones finishing well at goal.  Final score 21-13.

The Vipers played the Sapphires on the Court 3 and the Vipers continued their great form with strong plays in all positions. Molly Delaney played a great attacking game and Tayler Durie was excellent reading the play and was competent all over the court.

The Sapphires played a fantastic team game with all players contributing well. Stand out players were Brittaney Bowen and Holly Brown.  Final score Vipers 23 def. Sapphires 16.
