Schier will power

Val Schier has defied the predictions of many to return to the Mayor's seat and head the Cairns Regional Council for another term.

Schier fought off opponents in Bob Manning, Margaret Cochrane, and Ian Thomas to claim victory in Saturday's Local Government Election.

Running as an independent, Schier has pledged to address the relatively high unemployment rate, re-instate the 5% rates discount for early payment, and strive to build the controversial $157 million Cairns Entertainment Precinct.

However, for those in the Douglas region it is the issue of deamalgamation which will be front of mind after Schier declared her support for the split on the campaign trail.

Cr Schier has promised to work with the new LNP State Government to deliver a referendum on the matter which could see a return to a Douglas Shire Council.

She said that despite the Cairns Regional Council's efforts it is clear the relationship is not working.
