Raiders' defence proves the difference

The Rattle n Hum Reef Raiders travelled to Atherton for their second game of the season against Southside on Saturday.

With spirits high from their first round win the boys hit the field confident making it two from two. But Southside had other ideas by scoring two tries in the first 15 minutes due to silly penalties and lack of ball control from the Raiders.

The next 20 minutes saw the Raiders control the ball and they slowly made inroads in Southside’s defence and posted a try themselves, going to the Raiders' first rugby international Nick Perry.

The boys went into the halftime break 10 to 5 only a try behind and full of confidence.

The second half started off the same as the first, but this time it was Southside making the errors and giving the Raiders great field territory.

They didn't waste any chances either with the ball crossing the stripe twice with one try going to Mickey Prudent scoring in the corner, and Grae Gilbert converted both tries to give the Raiders the lead 17-10.

With 15 minutes to go the game was played at a frantic pace and Southside threw everything at the Raiders, however their defence held strong to take out the win.

The coach was happy to take the points and was pleased to see that the Raiders held Southside scoreless for over an hour. He also commented "Ugly wins are still a win, but there is still a long way to go".

The best players for the day were Mickey Prudent and Grae Gilbert, and the Paddy's Player of the Day went to Phil (I won a meat tray) Stewart.

But next week will be the Raiders' biggest challenge for the year to date taking on Barron Trinity at home on Saturday at 3.30pm.
