Medal haul for outriggers
Competing at two different Regattas over the weekend, paddlers from our local Outrigger Canoe club came home with a total of seven medals and lots of great stories to tell.
At the 40 km Gold Coast Cup at Coolangatta, Faye Lilly (winning Gold in the Senior Master Division) and Wendy Morris teamed up with teams from Northcliffe and Burley Heights.
Meanwhile in Townsville, 18 more paddlers attended Round 2 of the Grand Prix series.
Danielle Bellereo, Mia Messinger, Cecily Ridderhof, Lili Jensen Jacky Cooke and Monique Johnston won silver in the Master Women 18km race and gold in the sprint.
Glen Thorp collected a bronze Medal in the open men and Bill Ridderhof a silver medal in the golden master men OC1 category, with Justin Whyte placing fifth in the master men.

Another silver medal went to Mia and Monique in the master women OC2 class.
At their first ever Regatta, Jennifer Pate, Kelly King, Winnie Shimona and Kim St. Pierre together with Sonja Jordan and Steere Ingrid Juchem placed seventh in the open 18km race and fifth in the sprint.
“The girls did a great job. The first Regatta is always hard but now we can build on this.” Club coach Ingrid Juchem said.
The open men’s crew of Bill Ridderhof, Glen Thorp, Justin Whyte, Tim Ellis and novice Lee Foster and Mick Botomsky had a fantastic fifth place in the sprint and completed the 18km race with a strong finish.
Luke Simons then joined up with five other paddlers to form the open mixed crew competing in a 6km and 500 metre sprint race.
The club is now looking forward to compete at the upcoming Great Barrier Reef Challenge on 26 May, a 40km downwind race from Palm Cove to Port Douglas.
