Huge week in junior netball

The Douglas Junior Netball competition started last Tuesday at Port Courts in surprisingly fine weather.

The Jewelled Pythons played the Gladiators, and the Pythons played a fun and enthusiastic first game even though they lost to a great team who played very good netball.

Hannah Durie for the Gladiators was spot on with her shooting scoring two goals, gaining her best and fairest and Libby Buzza was player's choice for her first 10/Under game.

The Gladiators were very slick for their first game. Ebony Schonenberger played dominant netball and was named player's choice and Jenna Kerswell played an exceptional game. Both team had lots of fun.

Final score Gladiators 4 def. Pythons 2.

The Wildcatz, in very smart in red and black, and the Net Set Go teams had a half hour training session then played for two quarters. For the Wildcatz Myah Lowenstein-Jones and Kate Padovan trained and played well and for Net Set Go they had their first experience at game time and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

The 12/Under game on Court 1 was played between the Diamonds and the Poison Apples. Both teams played a very good first quarter trading shot for shot over the court.

The second quarter saw the Diamonds pick up their pace and showed some excellent defence stopping the Poison Apples shooting for goal. The next two quarters were very close with the Diamonds coming out victors 12 - 9.

Best players were Mia Devine-Cameron, Aleesha Viola, Denby Woods and Jemma Fasano.

Court 2 hosted the Red Hot Peppers and the Miallo Allstars and thanks to Shannon Lincoln for playing with the Allstars. Lana Baxter was fantastic over the court and Ellie McKay shot some great goals

For the Peppers Kate Padovan created space and excellent leads and Keely Harold played a great game.

Finals score Red Hot Peppers 10 def. Miallo Allstars 8.

The 12/Under Reps played the Breakers in the 14-16/Under Competition.  The Reps played a very strong game for four quarters. Lana Baxter was dynamic in centre and Bonnie Francis put in a very strong defensive game.

The team moved the ball quickly with fantastic passing and timing.  The Breakers played a good game with Jess Viola putting in a great attacking game and positioned herself well. Breeana Fordham was strong in play and showed excellent footwork and Georgia Duncan rebounded well.

Final Score 12/Under Reps 16 def. Breakers 4.

The Vipers played the Sapphires on Court 2 and the Vipers played well with Jeorgia Westgate showing she has not lost her eye over the break and shooting well for goal.

Jess Eagle-Rowe was strong in defence and one of the younger team players, Nicky Samson, put in a great game. The Sapphires also played well. Lauren Ryan read the play and made some great intercepts, Daisy Hawkes used her height to full advantage and worked well along with Brittany Bowen.

Court 3 saw the Young Fusion play Dynamite with Fusion leading by five goals in the first quarter. Esther Nulty and Marley Cairns shot magically for goal, being the two highest scorers for the game. The defence was strong but with a little more training could be even stronger.

Fusion won by 9 goals.

Douglas Netball has introduced a Junior and Senior Umpiring program to train new umpires for our game. Each team has to supply two trainee umpires who are trained by Coral Deen the umpires convenor.

They then take the court for practical umpiring with experienced umpires.  Thanks to Kyah and Bonnie Francis, Lana Baxter, Tayler Durie, Saisha Schonenberger, Jess Viola, Georgia Duncan, Maddy Weaver, Holly Brown, Vanessa Wood and Senior Umpires Caroline Miller, Natalie Littler, Jacinta Littler, Rachael Ramsay, Marta Smith, Corinne Durie, Coral Deen and Cassandra Hill.
