Council workers abused

The recent backlash against the Cairns Regional Council over the removal of coconut palms on Four Mile Beach has resulted in some Council workers being targeted for abuse.

The Newsport has been made aware that one particular worker now dreads going to work each day after being verbally abused by passers-by venting their anger over Council's revegetation project.

Division 10 councillor Julia Leu described the situation as "extremely unfair" and defended the Council's employees.

"They work hard under difficult circumstances. they're the ones outside copping the heat and the rain.

"They work under direction and our staff are very skilled in what they do and they care for the programs and the environment they work in," she said.

"I would urge the community to be respectful to Council employees."

Tension has been running high over the past few weeks after 49 coconut palms were removed to make way for the planting of 3000 native species.

Residents say there was insufficient community consultation by Council to notify residents of their plans.

Douglas Regional Manager Liz Collyer was unavailable for comment.
