Cairns Airport welcomed the return of Tiger Airways to Cairns, yesterday, ANZAC Day with the first of a new daily return service between Melbourne and Cairns at around noon.

Cairns Airport Chief Executive Officer, Kevin Brown, said the Tiger service was very welcome on this popular route. “Melbourne – Cairns has performed very well over the past couple of years and we are confident we can work with Tiger to achieve further growth on this route through their service, particularly as they now offer passengers daytime arrival and departure,” Mr Brown said.

“We will also be working with Tiger to explore opportunities for them to expand into other Cairns routes.”

“The Melbourne flights will provide a much needed boost for the region with a daily domestic service calculated to, on average, generate an additional $75million per annum in gross regional product and generate 843 new jobs in the region.”

TTNQ’s Chief Executive Officer, Rob Giason, said consumer demand from Melbourne is consistently strong and Tiger Airways will provide more competition on the route.

“Our most recent statistics (NVS YE Dec 2011) show that domestic holiday visitor numbers grew by 11%, driven by visitation from Melbourne and Sydney. The return of Tiger Airways with capacity of almost 65,000 seats annually is great news for Cairns and Tropical North Queensland.”
