Aussie sport legend in Port

An Australian sporting legend will be in Port Douglas this weekend passing on her wealth of knowledge to netballers and coaches eager for development.

There aren't many bigger names in Australian Netball than Vicki Wilson. She had a stellar career as a player representing Australia for 15 years which included the triumphant gold medal winning team at the Commonwealth Games and was involved in the one point win in the 1999 World Championship final.

After retiring she turned to coaching, taking over the reins of the Queensland Firebirds in 2006, and was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Australian Netball Hall of Fame in November 2008.

But despite her credentials, Douglas Netball Association's Sharon Beechey says the champion remains down to earth and approachable.

"After going to her clinics and seeing the way she performs she just has a really good way with the kids and she makes them feel comfortable.

"At first you're in awe of her, but then she automatically puts you at ease."

Ms Beechey said Wilson will be a brilliant source of information for the region's coaches as well as young players.

"She makes it easy for the coaches to understand as well. It is intimidating at first but someone like her who makes you feel so comfortable and you're not stupid if you ask questions."

The clinics are part of a concerted effort of the Douglas Netball Association to improve player skill and fitness development.

"Throughout the whole Association now we're teaching the technique and teaching it properly so they can get through the different stages (of development)," Ms Beechey said.

"Over the last three years we've grown and each year we've learnt more and put in place these pathways."

Wilson will run clinics on Friday afternoon and Saturday at the Port Douglas Sports Complex.

"This will be the first time we've had such a high profile presenter come up here and do it in Douglas. We always have to travel, we always have to go to Cairns so this year it'll be great to have Vicki here," Ms Beechey said.
