The sports wrap with Nicky G

2011 seems to be the year where dreams come true for some of our Aussie athletes as Sam Stosur joins Cadel Evans in pulling off mission impossible!

How dare an Aussie ruin what was supposed to be an all American weekend with the 9/11 anniversary and all. Not only that she showed a hell of a lot more class than her opponent and could easily be the equivalent of a female Pat Rafter – humble and modest. Let’s hope she stays at the top and wins a few more slams.

The Aussie basketball teams both qualified for London with straight sets victories over the Kiwis.

The girls result was probably never in doubt but I must admit I was nervous for the men. The Kiwis have a bloke by the name of Kirk Penney and he dominates similar to what Andrew Gaze did in the green and gold.

To the Aussies' credit however they did a pretty good job on him and the Kiwis didn’t have another ‘go to’ guy.

There is to be a big announcement on Wednesday in the basketball world and my spies tell me Andrew Bogut is the subject. I think Sydney Kings supporters might be happy with what they hear.

There are only six sides left in the AFL now as St Kilda and Essendon both bite the dust.

Sydney did a great job to claim the Saints' scalp and Essendon were completely outclassed by Carlton. West Coast took the all powerful Collingwood down the wire and Geelong held off the injured Hawks.

With Buddy Franklin going down to injury it’s looking more and more like a Collingwood – Geelong Grand Final. I only tipped two right last week but I’ll have another crack...

Hawks vs Swans (Fri MCG)
The Hawks will get this one in a single point thriller due to having a bit more strength in the midfield  - Hawks by 7

Eagles vs Carlton (Sat WA)

Carlton is bragging about having won its last five on the road but that unfortunately will not get to six. West Coast's great comeback season will last at least one more week. Eagles by 14.

This weeks winners
Collingwood; Not as dominant as the Pie army would have liked.
Sam Stoser; Yeah Baby!
Aussie Basketballers; Here we come Pommies!
Swans; Paul who?
Carlton; Smashed em’!
Geelong; There’s a side left who can still beat Collingwood.

This weeks losers
Serena Williams; Great to see the old fashioned ‘dummy spit’ is still alive and well.
Essendon; Not the best way to go out.
St Kilda; Gotta win the home finals.
