Stosur wins US Open tennis final

Queensland’s Samantha Stosur has won the womens’ US Open tennis final in New York, claiming US$1.8 million in prize money.

The 27-year-old Gold Coast product took just one hour and 13 minutes to dispose of  American Serena Williams, 6-2 6-3 to become the first Australia's first women's major winner since Evonne Goolagong Cawley at Wimbledon in 1980.

Ninth-seed Stosur took 31 minutes to take the first set, after 28th-seed Williams failed to rise to the occasion at Flushing Meadow which co-incided with the 10th anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks.

Stosur then broke the first game of the second set in controversy, with Williams handed a code violation for abusing the chair umpire, later calling the umpire “hateful” and “unattractive inside”.

Williams’ outburst seemed to produce some emotional tennis for the home favourite, but Stosur held composure to turn defensive style into attack and wrap up the second set in stunning fashion.

Stosur wins the US Open in her second grand slam final appearance in career history, runner-up to Francesa Schiavone in the 2010 French Open.
