Only the beginning for Men's Shed

The grand opening of Mossman's Men's Shed yesterday morning drew an enthusiastic crowd, all eager to share skills, experience, and friendship to build a stronger community.

The Men's Shed concept is designed to provide a place where men of all ages can learn new skills to help them deal with life's problems and stresses in a healthy way.

As part of the launch, the Men's Shed has partnered with Lend Lease's Springboard Progam which aims to bring Lend Lease employees from different cultures from around the world together for an intensive four-day personal development experience.

Springboard participant Juey Thanyakittikul, an Australian of Thai heritage living in London, was at the opening and said everyone involved is learning new skills, regardless of their background.

"For me, particularly, Bob (Gooch), Ken (Keith) and Barry (Paterson) have taught us their life experiences. In a sense these guys are mentoring us," he said.

"Some of the guys who are in the financial area are learning new (construction) skills.

"It's a real community thing because people don't experience that from other cultures."

Furniture making, bike repairs, toy making, skateboard making, arts and crafts, and gardening are just some of the projects already underway.

"Some of the ideas we've got are from when new faces come in and we ask what it (the Men's Shed) could be used for," said Springboard facilitator, Ross Greenwood, who is involved in a total of eight similar programs.
