Mossman Library will host a touring exhibition celebrating the life and work of the late Professor Fred Hollows.

The Life and Work of Professor Fred Hollows will be on display at Mossman Library from September 26 to October 12.

The exhibition uses pictures and stories to outline the life and achievements of Fred Hollows and the continuing work of The Fred Hollows Foundation.

Now 18 years since the passing of Professor Hollows, the exhibition is supported by his widow, Gabi Hollows, who says she hopes it will offer the public a chance to learn more about Fred’s dream of eradicating avoidable blindness and improving indigenous health.

Libraries manager Kerrie Still said Fred Hollows was a passionate ophthalmologist who became known for his work to help restore the eyesight of thousands of people in developing countries and his passionate plight to improve indigenous health in Australia. In 1993 he lost his battle with cancer, aged 63.

“This exhibition will help people to gain a better understanding of the work that Professor Hollows did during his lifetime, and that which continues under the guidance of the Fred Hollows Foundation,” Ms Still said.

Mayor Val Schier said the exhibition was one not to be missed.

“Fred Hollows was such an inspiring person and to gain an insight into his life and the people he has helped will no doubt be a moving experience,” Cr Schier said.

Mossman Library is open 10am-5pm Monday to Wednesday, 10am-6pm Thursday, 10am-4.30pm Friday and 9am-noon Saturday.
