Dragons crush Hmong, look to GF

The Douglas United Dragons look certain to storm into the men’s second division grand final after demolishing Hmong Cairns 6-0 in FNQ Football’s first semi final on Friday night at Cassowary Park.

In a coup for local soccer, the Dragons will also host the men’s second division grand final at Cassowary Park on Friday, September 23.

Friday’s win against Hmong saw Jordan Butterss named best on ground for the Dragons less than a week after playing a CAFL elimination final for the Crocs, while Nick Tither and Gary Fitzgerald were valuable in defence.

John Raffaele continued his scoring run with two goals, while Rodney Rasmussen scored a self-proclaimed “header of the year”, guiding the ball into the onion bag courtesy of a flawless Ben Serrett cross.

Irishman, Eugene Brown scored his first goal of the season and played well in the middle, while Matt Smith and Scotsman Will Storrar also scored for the Dragons.

According to Rasmussen, the Dragons have figured out their best starting 11 and will take the match-winning combination into the Friday night’s preliminary final against Atherton in Atherton, who were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by Edge Hill in Edge Hill last Friday night.

The match starts at 8pm.
