Cricket hits off in Port Douglas

After some toing and froing with the Cairns Far North Cricket assoc the fixture list has been finalised, partially at least, ahead of this weekend's opening round of matches.

The committee in charge of the draw were set a challenging task with clubs pulling teams out, and then adding them again, as well as trying to match the seniors fixture with that of the juniors.

By late last night they had only been able to produce the draw for the first two rounds of the competition which sees the Douglas Mudcrabs Senior C Grade team taking on Rovers Cricket Club in Cairns at Griffiths Park No. 2 for an 8:30am start.

"Not an ideal time for some of the players living in the Daintree region, but better than not being able to field a team due to work committements," was how Muddies' player, Josh McConnell, described the fixure.

The B Grade senior Muddies will play at home at the Port Douglas Sporting Complex also against Rovers on Sunday afternoon from 1pm, so get on down to see the start of what is set to be a great season with lots of new players and young juniors like Glen Ives, David Coulthard and Ben Shrimpton all looking like playing in either the C Grade or B Grade teams.

"It is great to see these young kids come through the local juniors in Douglas and progress straight into the senior ranks. After some strong pre season training they certainly deserve a spot in the first round of matches," said Bill Coulthard, Muddies club president.

Full team lists will be released on The Newsport Sports pages tomorrow.
