Art House gets new name

The last two years has brought many changes to the Art House in Port Douglas as it continues with its revamp.

In 2010 the group significantly increased their membership, hold a variety of classes and acquire an artspace with the generosity of John Morris.

"This gift gave us a home, something we had never really had before, but we had always dreamed about it," said president Cheryl Welham.

"The renovation of the artspace only came about with the assistance of an army of enthusiastic volunteers. This space is currently been used for classes, sales, meetings and open studios. And some students are now members."

Next came a close analysis of what values the group held dear. Two General Meetings in April gave members the opportunity to have their say, which became the guidelines of the group.

Art House was rapidly evolving into something quite new, and members at the meetings suggested that it was time to change the name to more closely signify who and what they were becoming.

At a General Meeting last week it was decided that a name change was required, and after some debate, members unanimously voted for the new name of 'Port Douglas Community Arts'.

"The application for the change of name has now been sent to the Office of Fair Trading for approval. Once this has been received we will then officially be able to call ourselves Port Douglas Community Arts," Ms Welham said.

"With this bold new step I think we will consolidate our position within the community."
